Chronicles of the Kings: Chapter 1 - A Look Back and a New Beginning

by Natalie Viel

The Omaha Kings FC is entering its third season in the MLIS (Major League Indoor Soccer) with determination and high expectations. Last season, the team showcased its resilience and talent, culminating in a dramatic playoff run that saw Omaha hosting the MLIS Finals at the iconic Baxter Arena. As the new season begins, the Kings are determined to build on past lessons, strengthen their team, and strive for the ultimate goal—a league championship.

2023-24 MLIS Semi-Finals and Finals

The Kings' 2023-24 season ended with Omaha hosting the MLIS Finals at Baxter Arena on April 12th and 14th, 2024. With over 2,000 fans in attendance, the event showcased the intensity and excitement of professional indoor soccer.

In the semi-finals, Omaha faced off against their rivals, the Chicago Mustangs. Despite falling behind early, the Kings mounted an impressive comeback in the final quarter to tie the game, forcing overtime. Unlike regular season rules, the playoff overtime format allowed Omaha to maintain momentum and secure a 9-7 victory, earning their second consecutive trip to the championship match.

The final saw Omaha face off against the Cleveland Crunch, for Omaha’s second consecutive season playing in the MLIS league championship match. Early in the game, a difficult play involving Manuel Lira resulted in a first-half injury to one of Cleveland’s key players, shifting the tone of the match. Cleveland capitalized on the momentum, steadily pulling ahead to secure a 9-4 victory. While the loss was a tough end to the season, it provided Omaha with valuable lessons and fueled their determination to return stronger.

Coaching Staff and Leadership

The Kings’ coaching staff brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the field this year. Head Coach Emmanuel Viel, has guided the Kings to multiple league titles over the years and was named 2022-23 MLIS Coach of the Year. Viel also leads the Omaha Queens, further cementing his impact on professional indoor soccer in Omaha. His father, Carlos Viel, serves as team manager and assistant coach, leveraging his professional soccer background in Argentina to provide invaluable expertise.

Omaha Kings' Morgan Penn (MASL2, MLIS)

Morgan Penn, a three-year veteran with the Kings, is stepping into the role of assistant coach for both the Kings and Queens this season. Though currently sidelined by injury from last season, Penn’s extensive knowledge of the game and his leadership qualities continue to play a vital role in the team’s success both on and off the field.

Preseason Preparation and Roster Highlights

The Kings began preseason training in early November at Off The Wall Indoor Soccer Facility, following tryouts in October. With a mix of experienced veterans and promising new talent, the team is primed for a competitive season.

Key Returning Players: Captain Manuel Lira, the 2022-23 MLIS MVP, continues to lead by example, supported by standout veterans like Leonides Mejia, Bobby Jaffery, and Gabi Gaiotto. Efren Flores, last year’s MLIS Goalkeeper of the Year, anchors the defense with skill and composure, while Say Say, Pedro Tostes, and Daniel Zuckweiler bring consistency and depth.

Ali Sodal: Omaha Kings M2/Kansas City Comets MASL/Omaha Kings MLIS/Omaha Kings M2

Notable Newcomers:Ali Sodal, an Omaha native and one of the Kings' founding players from their 2019 season, makes his highly anticipated return this year. Sodal played a key role in the Kings’ early success through their M3 and MASL2 campaigns before advancing to the MASL, where he showcased his talents with the Kansas City Comets and St. Louis Ambush. A Westside High School alum and Midland University standout, Sodal holds Midland’s all-time record for goals (49) and points (115). His homecoming is a significant moment for Omaha soccer, as he brings professional experience, leadership, and an enduring connection to the city’s soccer roots. He will be leading the team as a Captain this season alongside Manuel Lira.

Murilo Ceruli: Omaha Kings M2/Iowa Demon Hawks M2/Omaha Kings MLIS/Omaha Kings M2

Murilo Ceruli, another familiar face from the Kings’ formative years, also returns to the team this season. Known for his defensive prowess, Ceruli was instrumental during the Kings’ M3 and MASL2 seasons, being awarded the 21-22 season’s MASL2’s Defensive Player of the Year (with the Kings), and has since added to his resume with a championship-winning campaign last year with the MASL2 Iowa Demon Hawks. Originally from São Paulo, Brazil, and an NAIA national champion with Hastings College (2016), Ceruli’s experience and championship mentality make him a key figure in the Kings’ efforts to compete at the highest level.

Cedar Moyer, a dynamic midfielder with an impressive international pedigree, joins the Kings for his debut season. A native of Gretna, Nebraska, Moyer’s career includes achievements such as top assist records in both England and Italy, as well as experience playing in Albania’s first division. His versatility and skillset add a fresh dynamic to the Kings’ roster, promising big contributions this season.

Season Opener: A Strong Start in Denver

The Kings kicked off their 2024-25 season on December 21st with a road game against the Colorado Bucks. Missing several key players due to scheduling conflicts, holidays and injuries, Omaha’s depth was put to the test. Despite these challenges, the Kings showed determination and grit, securing a 5-4 victory.

Manuel Lira was unavailable for this match, serving a red card suspension carried over from the 2023-24 Finals. Key contributors for this game included Leonides Mejia, who delivered a stellar hat trick, and goals from Ali Sodal and Say Say. The victory underscored the team’s resilience and set a promising tone for the season.
